Neck Exercise For Wrestling - Neck Collar Tie Exercise Drill

August 7th, 2008

Here’s a neck exercise I use all the time… I love adding this drill in my neck workouts! You’ll see how this neck exercise is sport-specific for wrestling, submission grappling and even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and mixed martial arts (MMA).

Whenever I can grab someone I can trust in the wrestling room, I make sure to get this kind of neck work in.

I can do this neck exercise as part of my warm-up before I wrestle and also for some intense conditioning once I’m ready to start going hard.

Lately, in the wrestling class I teach at Lloyd Irvin’s MMA & BJJ Academy in Maryland, I’ve been having the grapplers get it in as part of their warm-up and then once they’re good and warmed up I’ll have them use it as a conditioning drill.

You’ll need a partner for this exercise, so use someone you can trust. Make sure to start off nice and easy then gradually up the resistance and intensity. Make sure your whole body is warmed up before you try this neck exercise drill.

Always consult a physician before trying any kind of neck exercises or any physical activity whatsoever. These videos and tips are not meant to be used as medical advice.

Video: Thanks To Everyone Who Signed Up At www.GrapplersProtectYourNeck.com To Get Free Neck Exercises And Neck Workouts For Wrestling, BJJ and Combat Sports

July 14th, 2008

Yesterday I was on a boat in DC with my coach, Lloyd Irvin…

We were masterminding about training, Brandon Vera’s upcoming UFC fight, and some big projects we’re working on.

Lloyd and I are really excited about www.GrapplersProtectYourNeck.com and I’ve been getting such a great response from it, it’s been overwhelming.

It’s been hard for me to get any sleep since I’ve launched the site, and this is just the beginning… you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

If you’re a grappler or participate in contact sports of any kind, I think you’re absolutely NUTS if you don’t do everything you can to protect your neck! So if I’ve gotta brave a storm on the “high seas” to get this message out, well then that’s what I’m gonna do!

When you watch the video, you’ll see I have a hard time talking and driving at the same time hahaha…

I just HAD to let you know how much I appreciate you trusting in me to help you with your neck training. All the positive feedback and emails I’ve been getting with success stories and testimonials from fellow grapplers and fighters about how these neck exercises and neck workout training tips are helping them.

Man, it’s an awesome feeling and it’s the best when I check my email early in the day and see all the great responses, it keeps me pumped up.

I’m always looking to improve and grow, so I consider everything I’m doing right now a “work in progress” so trust me when I say, you’re going to get a lot of value for sticking with me and applying what you’ll learn throughout this ongoing free neck training course for grapplers and combat sports atheltes.

THANK YOU!!!

“I Was Paralyzed From A Judo Throw…”

July 11th, 2008

My coach, Lloyd Irvin, sent an email out today to people who are signed up on his mailing list. Here’s what Lloyd Irvin had to say, in his own words:

Lloyd Irvin Speaks:

“I was paralyzed from a judo throw and you should….”

As I laid on the ground and couldn’t move my arms
or legs, I started thinking about my family, my life,
my son and what it was going to be like to spend the
rest of my life in a wheelchair.

This is exactly what I was thinking after I got thrown
on my head in a Judo tournament in 2003.

Talk about a scary experience.

After spending the next year off the mats, doctors
telling me that life as I knew it would never be the same
again. Doctors telling me that I need to have spinal fusion
the very next day(don’t forget that this was in 2003).

After this injury the entire martial arts community
reached out to me and the support was tremendous.
People from all over the World were sharing their neck
injury stories with me, what they did to recover, what
different types of procedures they had and all kinds of
alternative strategies.

Then I started to realize how many people in the grappling
World get neck injuries. No one shared this with me when
I first started. I then started asking myself questions.

Why don’t people in the grappling/mma World condition their
necks more? I know that I didn’t.

Then I met a guy name Jim Kelly whose neck injury was just
down right sad!

He BROKE HIS NECK, he had complications for years, the doctors
told him that if his neck wasn’t so strong he would be ‘dead’. You
have to see the story that they wrote in the news paper about him.

But now they call it a ‘miracle’ that he’s back to training, competing
and plans on doing a mma fight.

Anyway the reason that I’m writing you is because you need
to know the truth about the sport you’re involved in.

You need to understand that protecting your spinal cord and
it all starts with protecting your neck.

Well Jim has set up a website where he’s giving away information
on how to protect your neck. How to use simple exercises
to make sure that you don’t end up in a wheelchair.

I sure wish that I knew about this when I first started.

I never knew the importance of building a strong neck
until I suffered my injury and was forced to.

Well Jim is on a mission to help as many people learn
how to protect their necks, if you grapple, do mma
or are involved in any contact sport, you owe it to
yourself to see what Jim is teaching.

It won’t cost you a single dime and Jim is really
passionate about this topic.

Finally launched ‘Grapplers Protect Your Neck’ website - THANKS

July 3rd, 2008

WOW… the response I’ve been getting since launching www.GrapplersProtectYourNeck.com is really overwhelming.

I’ll tell you what… this is something I’ve been wanting to DO for a long time. It’s 3:17am in the morning right now, I’m actually lying in bed but can’t go to sleep, I’m so jacked up from training and what’s been going on with my neck project and all the positive feedback and “Thank you’s” I’ve been getting. “Project” isn’t really the right word because this isn’t just a ‘project’ to me; this is something that’s part of my life.

Lloyd Irvin is my coach on and off the mats, and he’s pushed me to DO more than I ever could on my own - on the mats and off.
Without Lloyd’s help, a lot of the things I’ve done and will do would have probably just been things I wished I would have done, looking back on them, when I get old.

I plan to make a mark by putting out there all my knowledge I’ve learned through the years about neck training, all the successes I’ve had and even the mistakes I’ve made, because I know the people who want to learn and who are willing to apply the knowledge will be helped a great deal.

So it feels pretty damn good to finally get this out.

THANKS for the responses I’ve been getting, and all the emails.

There are LOTS of us grapplers who’ve suffered neck injuries, from minor to major, and it’s good to hear from people who grinded out rehab and surgeries, who are still training, and even grapplers who want to make sure they do as much as they can to prevent neck injuries while wrestling.

I’ve seen too many of my friends and coaches go down because of neck problems!

On a below post you can check out some of the newspaper articles about my wrestling neck injury.

I had to have an emergency C1-C2 fusion to fix my neck, and the bottom line is, if my neck wasn’t so muscular, I would’ve wound up like Christopher Reeve or would’ve just plain died.

A lot of people don’t know that, even some people I currently train with.

Bottom line, my neck training saved my life, and it also enables (NOT past tense) me to continue to train.

As a matter of fact, I’m currently training for my first MMA fight. Again, I can’t stress enough how this all comes back to Lloyd Irvin, my coach and my team, Team Lloyd Irvin. They push me so hard and don’t let me make excuses, I can’t thank them all enough.
I feel amazing right now, I can’t explain it.

I feel so grateful and lucky that I set foot into BJJ United back in Philly and started training with Jared, and joining Team Lloyd Irvin. Jared and the rest of the guys were there for me during a real tough time I was having with some neck problems, and they helped me push through them, and now I’m here in Maryland working and training with Lloyd Irvin. What more can a guy ask for, to know such great people.

I don’t really know what else to say, but that’s my 3am rant….

I’m glad so many people have chosen to visit my site and at least give it a try, because I know the kind of results this neck training can get you.
This is just the beginning.

Respect. No Excuses.

I Need Your Help

January 15th, 2008

Fellow Grappler,

I could use YOUR HELP with something. I’m in the middle of putting together the material for my complete home study course on neck training for grapplers and combat athletes that I’ve been working on for a while now. Since I first began seriously training my neck, I’ve learned so many exercises and techniques and have had so many huge insights and realizations in all areas of neck training for serious athletes.

I want to share them all with you, my fellow grapplers. However, I still would like to ask for your help so that you can tell me what the most important things are concerning neck training for athletes that you would like to know. Tell me everything. Tell me your challenges, your frustrations, your successes, everything. Tell me whatever you’d like to learn; tell me what exercises you’d like to learn.

So please do me a favor right now and leave me a comment, or go HERE to www.NoMoreNeckProblems.com and tell me your sticking points, your challenges, your frustrations… Tell me the 1 or 2 or 3 things that you’d really like for me to include in this program. I want to know what’s most important to YOU for me to teach, as I’m currently putting all the material together.

Now, I’m personally going to go through all these comments and questions and I’m going to read every single one of them personally. So, you’re going to get to communicate with me directly, and what you say matters to me. I’m actually going to build this program based on what you tell me to include in it. So click on this link HERE or go to www.NoMoreNeckProblems.com and leave me a comment or a question, and I’ll talk to you soon!

Thanks!

“The Toughest Takedown” - Neck Injury Forces Wrestler Off The Mats (for a while)

January 15th, 2008

Here is another article about me and my neck injury back in ‘97… reporter wanted to do a story, so he came to my house after I got out of the hospital and having a C1-C2 neck fusion…

Neck Injury - Wrestling Article - Neck Training for Wrestling and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Saves Wrestler’s Life

Wrestling article about Neck Injury - Neck Surgery - Neck Exercises and neck training for wrestling and grappling

Neck Injury Forces Wrestler and BJJ Fighter to have emergency neck surgery - Neck training saved this wrestler’s life.

I want to move on from this and I don’t want this to be a part of my identity, although I gotta say there’s not a day that goes by where I don’t think about it, when I went to the hospital and after all the testing the doctor told me to “forget about wrestling” and that I was just “lucky to be alive.” It still haunts me.

Before that moment, I had the entire year planned out, even going so far as to carve my goals into my wall so I can see them every time I left my room. For my main goal, I knew that if I just concentrated on being the hardest working guy in and out of the room, everything would fall into place. I knew EXACTLY what I was gonna do and how I was gonna do it. So, needless to say, this was a complete SHOCK to me.

The doctors told me that if it wasn’t for my neck being so big and strong, if my neck muscles weren’t so thick and dense, that I would’ve been paralyzed or dead. They couldn’t believe I even finished the camp. The doctors told me the only thing that held my spine in place were my neck muscles.

I can’t help but think about what would’ve happened if I wasn’t so fanatical about training my neck. I put more time into training my neck than any other body part (my core, my abs being maybe the only exception). I training my neck hard everyday and the training was intense, I did every kind of neck exercise you could imagine. This specific neck training literally saved my life.

So that’s why I want to help other grapplers, wrestlers, fighters, BJJ’ers and combat athletes of every kind train their necks properly. Spinal injuries SUCK and if I can help other athletes prevent these types of devastating and sometimes career-ending injuries, or even come back from these injuries and be able to still train and compete, like I’m doing with Team Lloyd Irvin, then I’ll feel pretty damn good.

So if you have a burning question about neck training for grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission wrestling, wrestling or any other combat sport, then please go HERE to www.NoMoreNeckProblems.com and ask me whatever is on your mind.

THANKS!

Neck Injury “Ends” Wrestler’s Career

December 1st, 2007

A newspaper article from July 18, 1997 when the word got out that I broke my neck at a wrestling camp during the summer before my senior year of high school. I remember seeing the headline and feeling like I got hit by a Mack truck… because the headline was WRONG… and my drive grew even stronger to prove everyone WRONG, including the doctors. Paperwork and red tape from the NCAA held me back a lot, but I was able to get back on the mats and train hard.
